First Contact

I don't know much about this but my cat has lost its mind. It all started the day we brought her home, and I kinda expected it because I get this result with almost all animals I come in contact with, and to tell you the truth I have no idea why.

Every time I am around an animal you would think I was their friend for many years, well that is how it started with this cat. We brought her home and before you know it she became so attached to me in a matter of hours; following me around the house every where I go, sitting on my lap, or lying on my belly, and when I go to bed she has to be there sleeping on my legs or somewhere near my body.

I originally got the cat for my wife and mostly for the kids; this would be their first pet, and I thought this would be good for them, and give them some responsibility.I also thought that having an animal in the house once again would also raise our spirits up, I know it did for me and my brother when I was younger, and its a known fact that animals can help people heal, and cope with things in life.

However what has happened now is that this cat/Kitten follows me everywhere and has become so attached to me it is almost like she is glued to me. My wife says she is now my cat because she doesn't have much to do with anyone else, she still plays with the kids, letting them chase her around and then chasing them around in return which is funny to watch especially when she hits the kitchen floor and goes off sliding out of control he , he.

My son claims it is his cat, and I am happy he loves that cat so dearly. He reminds me of how I was at his age with animals and I believe he will have the same ability to draw animals to him such as I do still today, and to tell you the truth it is kinda freaky but cool at the same time.

I will try and get some photos that my parents took while at the San Diego Zoo where we where in one of theses huge bird cages and this road runner was running from everyone else but yet runs right up to me and hops on my finger and just sits there and let me pet it. My parents took a photo of it because it was strange to everyone in there who couldn't even get near it; that it would just run up to me like it considered me a friend or something.

I hope my son can maintain that posture with animals because it is real rewarding, but that is beside the point of this hub so let me get back to the story.

The Dilemma

Here for the past two weeks or better my cat has started something new and it is driving me out of my mind. Every time I go to bed, instead of just curling up next to me and going to sleep she now has turned my bed into some kind of race track.

She runs at full throttle around and around the bed, doing laps. And if that isn't enough she will sometimes stop at the headboard and sit there just long enough where I am almost completely out then she goes charging past my face nearly stepping on me and wakes me up and if I don't acknowledge her she will do it two to thee times more just to be sure I have took notice.

As of recent she started something new on top of everything thing else; because I guess she felt it wasn't affective enough, she gets going real good making laps around the bed then she turns and runs the full length of my body and when she reaches my head she using it as a launch pad and jumps up to the top of the head board. After about 5 or 6 times of this I temporally lost my sanity and snatched her from the top of the head board and tossed her across the room into the bathroom, then got up and chased her around until she found cover underneath the bed.while all that was happening I noticed just as I laid back down that her claws gashed a few good deep cuts into my arm so I was up having to tend to bleeding.

I might be the blame for her action but I am not so sure, let me explain.

When we first got her she was so small and fun to play with, and ever time I would go to bed she would be there pouncing onto my hand and from there playing would commence, I played a bit rough with her but she didn't seem to mind it. Her claws where not that big or sharp at the time and she would scratch me but it did not bother me because she was a kitten and I knew she didn't mean it.But as time went on she got a bit rougher with me as I did her and I would go into work with people looking at me and saying what the heck happen to your hands or arms, and I would just laugh and say I have a crazy cat. well one day when I just hit the bed the same old routine would start me rough housing with her and she out right bit right threw my hand between the thumb and index finger completely gashing me open, I looked at my hand and seen it bleeding like crazy and got up and doctored it; it took 30 minutes to get it to stop.

I decided right then and there that it was time to break her from being over aggressive not to mention that I was now losing to much sleep over all this. so every time she started getting to aggressive I would tap her on the nose and say NO! in a firm voice and then stop playing with her.It was starting to work but then all of a sudden she started doing all this crazy stuff in the bedroom, so as you can see I am not sure this is because I have been correcting her and stop rough housing with her or she is just losing her mind, or maybe this is retaliation; whatever the case is I am thinking on taking more drastic measures.

What Should I Do?

Now I am considering getting rid of her but I still love the cat and I don't really want to hurt my boys after they have gotten so attached to her. I know that declawing her would solve some of the problems but she would most likely find another way to keep me awake and annoy me.

Don't get me wrong I would rather keep her because she is real cute and affectionate cat when she is calmed down. However sense I had thrown her across the room she hasn't done anything new and I might have got her to realize there is a time for playing and a time to just be calm, now all she does when I go to bed is sit in her cat bed and watch me while I fall to sleep which is kinda freaky as if she is waiting for me to go to sleep so she can take me out or something, I just wish I could hear what's really going on up there between her little ears.

So maybe someone can tell me rather I should hold off in getting rid of her and see how it turns out or maybe suggest a cat psychiatrist or something to help me cope with the whole deal. I really do not want to break my kids heart trucking her to some shelter.

I would give her more time and don't be aggressive with her. Then she gets confused when it's play and when it's not. All cats have there crazy time. It's usually around the same time of day each day. Just ignore it. Don't rough play too much or that will cause a confused aggressive cat. What I did was got a little bed to put on my bed and would say "Now, get in bed, go night night..LOL) and I put her in the bed, she'd get out. Then I would say lie down and tap on her bed, then she started to (when she's being a wise-ass) she knows she's not going to win so she lies down and puts her chin on her bed, like an chin rest and she thinks she won. Then we go to sleep and if i wake up in the night, she's in her bed. Right now her bed is on my bed and she's sleeping on the bed but not in hers. As long as she's lying down calm that's the goal so if they think they won, good for them but you got the end result and that was for her to calm down. Even though she's sleeping now, she will wake up and end up in her bed at some point during the night. So, when she has her crazy time, just act like she's not there and if she doesn't stop, don't tap her on the nose but just say no. Also, if that doesn't work then put her out of the room and close the door. It will take a little while but cats can be trained. She's just confused right now but she will get the hint after a few more nights of disturbed sleep if you keep ignoring her. They are like kids and give up on their little crazy tantrum, even though they are just playing around. She doesn't know it's time to sleep and not play. She's still learning. Just don't toss her or yell. She either goes in a bed (which she'll settle down if she doesn't want to get in it or she will leave the room on her own). Try a few things and don't play too much with her, and if she ever bites and grabs you, don't move your arm just stay still(if that is what she is biting) and just say NO! you can point or tap on the bed for her to lie down but don't let her bite and grab at you. I can put my cat right up to my face and never would she think to bite or scratch me. She knows play time and when it's not play time now. So give a little more time but think of her as a kid trying to get attention, but without a harsh punishment. Hitting or tapping, or scaring in any way will just cause long term issues. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback, Yes I will go that route and see how she turns out. I feel guilty for tossing her and thought she would not forgive me for that, but to my surprise she came right up to me the next day and started loving on me as to say she was sorry or something.

I do not harm animals nor do I wish to and even thou she never got hurt I felt bad over the whole deal because I love animals so I am going to not let it irritate me like it did that day, I just so happened to been under a bit of stress that day and she was the trigger.

again thank you: W.Vierra
